The Binghamton University Theatre Department seeks a Resident Music Director for a 3-year academic year appointment (college year) to begin Fall 2022 when the Theatre Department will begin offering a BFA in Musical Theatre. This position is designed to support the new degree program by music directing 1-2 productions per year and teaching musical theatre courses to majors and other students interested in musical theatre performance throughout the university. A typical semester will include duties taken from the list of abilities below.
Candidate Abilities:
Music direct Theatre Department productions. Including:
Collaborating with the creative team to establish the look, feel, and sound of the production and its characters
Teaching music to singers
Running music rehearsals with cast and/or orchestra
Providing piano accompaniment for rehearsals
Conducting and/or accompanying performances
Recruiting instrumentalists for pit orchestra and adjusting orchestration as needed
Administering to all other aspects of the production’s musical integrity
Co-teach and accompany musical theatre performance courses
Coach singers in a diverse array of musical theatre styles (legit, pop, belt, rock, etc.)
Run vocal warmups in classes and rehearsals
Teach foundational music skills to young/pre-professional singers in music classes (including basic music theory, sight-singing, ear training, etc.)
Advise and train student music directors
Offer expertise in student juries and other assessment
Help prepare students for a professional career in musical theatre
Participate in departmental recruitment efforts
Actively support a diverse, inclusive, and collaborative creative environment reflecting the University’s diverse student population

Job Requirements:

A terminal degree, or a bachelor’s degree with substantial experience in the professional musical theatre world
Exceptional musicianship and strong accompaniment skills
Ability to coach a variety of singing styles relevant to the musical theatre performer
A thorough understanding of musical theatre, including new musicals and emerging trends
Passion for mentoring young artists
Commitment to contributing to an inclusive learning environment
Visa sponsorship is not available for this position
Preferred Qualifications:
Undergraduate teaching experience
Broadway, national tour, and/or major regional theatre credits
The ability to teach vocal technique in a classroom and/or studio setting is also desirable.
