Job Description : | Position Overview About the Position The Public Information Officer Supervisor oversees the following areas: public information, public involvement, community relations, marketing, social media, and media relations for MCDOT’s transportation and maintenance projects. Education Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, or a closely related field Experience Three years of experience including supervision in community relations, communications experience, or related OR An equivalent combination of post-secondary education and/or job-related experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis. Other Requirements Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Arizona driver’s license by the time of hire Our Preferred Candidate has Five years of increasingly responsible public and community relations, public information, social media and media relations, graphic design and event coordination experience, including five years of supervisory experience Essential Job Tasks The tasks listed are a representation and not an all-inclusive list of essential job tasks for this position. Plans, develops, directs, implements, and evaluates the external communications program for MCDOT including the Communication Branch’s work plan, budget, projects, to include MCDOT’s Transportation Improvement Program (TIP), Maintenance Improvement Program (MIP), and Maintenance outreach efforts. Collaborates with the Planning Branch on their outreach efforts Leads and Supervises staff responsible for public information, community relations, public involvement, marketing, social media, media relations, and external event coordination for Adopt a Road and MCDOT TIP and MIP efforts Collaborates with other MCDOT branches, divisions, local jurisdictions, and partnering agencies to provide communication, presentation, video, photographic, graphic, project webpage, messaging, and event support services Plans, develops, directs, implements, and evaluates MCDOT social media and media outreach including reviewing and preparing news releases, responding to media inquiries, and building media relations for TIP and MIP efforts. Collaborates for department-wide social media and media efforts Serves as MCDOT spokesperson in sensitive and/or complex matters Develops and reviews management reports related to Communication Branch activities Reviews all written and published material prepared and/or distributed externally by MCDOT Monitors and manages workflow including the review and evaluation of subordinate employees’ work Consults with management regularly on problems affecting customer communications and in formulating policies that will strengthen community relations and customer service Working Conditions Must be able to work in all-weather types (extreme heat, cold, wind, rain); must have manual dexterity of hands and body to operate office equipment as well as handle field conditions as needed; must be able to hear, see, climb, crouch, bend, and lift/carry up to 50 pounds with or without assistance of a cart or device. Must be able to manage frequent interruptions, time pressures, high work volumes, multiple and complicated tasks, prompt decision making and interaction with government officials and the public, must constantly maintain accuracy, ethical behavior and professional demeanor. Must be able to work closely with other team members to complete assigned tasks. Will also be exposed to long hours of sitting and using a computer. Must be available to work nights and/or weekends for meetings, events or emergency response.
