The music director will be an integral part of the lay staff and larger community, selecting and preparing music, in conjunction with the pastor, to shape and support worship in the United Methodist tradition. As UnitedMethodists, we endeavor “to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.” Our music director will play a leading role in this work.We offer a beautiful sanctuary space surrounded by stained glass windows depicting scenes from theOld and New Testaments. This space is home to our Sunday worship service and also numerous weddings and other services throughout the year. Our congregation is blessed to worship in a space known throughout the community. GPUMC seeks to build on this foundation and develop new ways to worship in the months and years to come. Music at GPUMC is woven into the fabric of this mission and a core ministry of our church.The music director will work collaboratively to further shape our children’s and youth music programming. They will work with the worship and outreach committees to create opportunities for diverse concerts for the larger community.Candidates for this role must demonstrate the ability to conduct an adult choir. GPUMC is seeking a music director who is comfortable with traditional and contemporary music suitable for church services and special programs.Equipment UsedSanctuary pipe organ of 42 ranks across three manuals and pedal. Slider chests, electric key action, and99 levels of memory. The organ was built by the Berghaus Organ Company in 2000.Sanctuary grand piano by Mason & Hamlin.Choir Room grand piano by Yamaha.Chapel upright piano by Kawai.Digital keyboard by Roland.Handbells (5 octaves), plus tone chimes, by SchulmerichThe music director is responsible for keeping all instruments in good repair, serviced when necessary, and in tune during performances.Supervision received/exercisedThe music director works under the general direction of the senior pastor and supervises other music program employees (organist, children’s choir director, etc.)Essential duties and responsibilities 1. As music director, select and provide choral music for one Sunday worship service from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Additional services may be added as GPUMC grows in the coming years.2. Select and provide worship service anthems/music in consultation with the pastor.3. Recruit, train, and direct adult and other choirs during regular and special services September through May.4. Rehearse as necessary with choirs weekly from September through May. Adult choir rehearsals are on Thursday evenings from 7:45 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.5. Prepare and arrange for music for weddings and funerals.6. Arrange special music in consultation with the preaching pastor for the weeks when the choirs are not participating in the worship service.7. Submit information for bulletins weekly.8. Choose and purchase music within the approved budget.9. Schedule, plan and prepare for special musical presentations throughout the year.10. Arrange for special soloists, accompanists, or instrumentalists.11. Be responsible for the choir’s appearance, sound, and delivery by working with the appropriate committees to achieve these goals.12. Attend worship committee meetings and other staff meetings to facilitate communication and planning.13. Work with the sound technicians to determine needs for music amplification when necessary.14. Work with the trustees to make suggestions regarding music instruments within the church.15. Other duties as required for the vision of the music program.Minimum qualifications – education and experienceBachelor’s of music degree required and a master’s degree in music/education desired. Knowledge of bells, care of bells and bell music score selection. Ability to play organ and piano would be a plus.Special requirements/qualificationsExperience as a “team player” in a church setting working with staff, musicians, and volunteers. The music director should be very comfortable selecting and directing a choir performing traditional musical selections. The ability to select and perform more contemporary selections is also beneficial.Physical DemandsAbility to conduct a choir.Compensation PackageAn annual salary will be established that is commensurate with education and experience. GPUMC withholds and pays Social Security and Medicare and will withhold taxes as directed by the music director. GPUMC employees are paid every two weeks. Salary range: $30,000 – $35,000.The music director may also offer private organ and/or vocal lessons at GPUMC for additional compensation. Such private lessons will be scheduled and conducted in a manner as to not interfere with the standard operations of the church. Compensation for private lessons will be established by the music director directly with their students.Benefits 1. Two weeks’ paid vacation, including Sundays.This is an at-will position, which means that GPUMC may terminate the employment of the employee for no reason or may abolish the position.
