Job Description : Tall Ship Providence is a visitor attraction based in Alexandria, Virginia; our focus is living history – we provide a window into life aboard Providence between 1776 and 1779 and the people who were connected to it, both aboard and ashore. Our programs provide a link to our country’s rich maritime and naval history and the American Revolution. Founded in 2017, Tall Ship Providence Foundation (TSPF) is a 501c3 education organization that owns and manages Providence. The number of employees range from 5 to 25 depending on the season.Historical Interpreters are the public face of the Tall Ship Providence Foundation. Their words and actions should make our guests feel welcome at all times while conveying enthusiasm for colonial, naval, and maritime history. This is a seasonal position from April through October with the opportunity for extended hours post-October. Additional hours may be available for Historical Interpreters who are also interested in working as a Deckhand.Historical Interpreters will be expected to: Memorize scripted information and background material on ProvidencePresent information in a way that is engaging and upbeatBe polite and helpful to all visitors at all timesEnsure visitor safety and well-being at all timesEntertain waiting visitors with songs, games, stories, or other relevant skillsWork outside regardless of weather conditions for shifts ranging from four to nine hours per day (including a lunch break)Find a substitute for their assigned shift if a conflict arisesAssist visitors with retail and ticket purchases when the sales assistant is busy or temporarily unavailableWear a colonial-style costume provided by TSPF and maintain the costume with careRequirements: At least 16 years of ageAble to memorize large amounts of information and present it in an engaging wayAble to repeat the same information numerous times without letting it become rotePatience with visitors who are hot, tired, or irritableAble to move heavy items on occasionReliable transportationOther desirable attributes but not requiredEnthusiasm for colonial, revolutionary, naval, and maritime historyActing or improv experienceForeign language skillsOther performance skills, such as juggling, singing, sword fighting, or storytellingWork Environment: This position operates at a marina, which requires physical requirements including but not limited to sitting and/or standing for extended periods of time, walking, lifting or carrying, pushing or pulling carts and other items, reaching overhead, at or below shoulder level, kneeling, climbing ramps or stairs, being in an outdoor environment in all weather and walking, standing or sitting on uneven or unsteady footing.Additional information: Providence will be visiting different ports in the DMV during our 2022 season. Interpreters are recommended to bring a packed lunch every day, but there may be fast food nearby depending on our location.Applicants are encouraged to apply for additional positions, including Retail Associate and Deckhand.The ship will be open to the public Wednesday-Sunday and holiday Mondays during the summer and will require full staffing through Labor Day. Please indicate how many hours per week you have available to work in your cover letter.Pay is $16/hour. Employees are responsible for recording their hours using a mobile smartphone app. TSPF issues paychecks on the 15thand the last workday of the month.Mandatory, paid training will take place in early March. Regular work will begin in late March, and continue through the end of October. Occasional evening hours may be available. Details will be provided at the interview/audition.Candidates will be provided with a script in advance of their interview/audition. Candidates are not expected to memorize the script but will need to present the content.
