One person may combine the three job positions into one larger position. Various tasks may also be flexed into one of the other two positions depending on the gifts and skills of the employee. See all job descriptions at www.messiahvancouver.orgPOSITION: Director of Worship and Music22 HOURS PER WEEK NON-EXEMPT RESPONSIBLE TO: Lead Pastor, The Church Leadership Team, and CongregationPosition Purpose: The core function of the Director of Worship and Music will be to develop, lead, and support others in worship through music and the arts. This focus recognizes both the strength of theLutheran Church’s liturgical traditions and the freedom inherent in this tradition to worshipGod in spirit and truth in a variety of forms and styles. The Director will work closely with all staff in the development of programs and expressions of talents, with individuals and small groups, to encourage the body of Christ and complement the mission and vision of MessiahLutheran Church. The Director will be responsible directly to the Pastors and will work closely with them in defining and developing new forms of worship experience within the church.Attributes: 1. A sincere love for God and God’s people2. A solid understanding of the foundations of the Christian faith and Lutheran traditions3. Perform duties and responsibilities in a manner to glorify Christ and further the mission and ministry of the church4. Effective communication techniques, including familiarity with software applications to create and send emails, memos, and community notices; ability to work in MSWord; ability or willingness to learn ProPresenter and willingness to learn ACS (the congregation’s church management and database software)5. Successfully complete reference, background, and motor vehicle investigationsScheduling and Availability: 1. Requires great flexibility in hours available to work, which will include evenings and weekends. Furthermore, it is recognized that the schedule may vary at different times of the year, e.g., holidays, Christmas, Lent and Holy Week, Vacation Bible School, funerals, memorials and the Midweek Program are generally when the position requirements will be most demanding2. The Director is expected to be on site a minimum of 45 minutes before and 30 minutes after all worship services and to attend staff meetings as needed; the director will actively engage in meeting and greeting people between services when present3. Notification of planned-for absences will be made to the supervising pastor beforehand, with a suitable substitute prearranged4. Regular and systematic check-in of phone, email, and text messages coming from or through the church is essential to the success of this positionEssential Job Duties 1. Provide musical leadership for all worship Sunday services at the Hazel Dell campusDirector of Worship and Music Job Description page 12. Direct and lead special musical groups to support worship participation including choirs and other musical groups3. Plan worship in coordination with the pastors, create video play lists and worship folders4. Plan and problem solve all aspects of the technical production for worship at Messiah, including video, audio, and lighting within the sanctuary5. Develop, recruit, train, support, and organize a team of volunteers to operate technology for worship services6. Utilize graphics and images for worship consistent with the themes for the weekend7. Develop a comprehensive musical program, encompassing new worship expressions, utilizing the lay talent available in the church and have oversite for the musical education program at Messiah. These programs may encompass a variety of ages and interests—choral, instrumental, song leading, and cantoring8. Develop an annual ministry budget and other reports as assigned9. Effectively communicate with a wide array of individuals in an appropriate and clear manner, regardless of the subject matter10. Work effectively in a team environment, as well as independently, to accomplish goals and objectives11. Effectively organize, plan and direct multiple programs at the Hazel Dell campus while maintaining a high quality of work12. Manage groups of adults and children, participating in music programs effectively interacting and working with children of diverse backgrounds, personalities, and from traditional and non-traditional families13. Maintain confidentialityEducation & Experience: A strong preference will be given to candidates who have a Bachelor’s degree in music, musical performance, or other related degree, and further to those who have experience in church music accompaniment and leadership.Working Conditions: The physical working conditions are largely those of an inside office. Moving between rooms and floors is required. Carrying loads not to exceed 20 pounds may be required. Chemical exposure is limited to craft, office and cleaning supplies.
