Job Description : ReedPop is looking for a Deputy Editor for the development of editorial content in the comics and pop culture space. This is a major new initiative in an extremely exciting sector, and the candidate selected for this role will have a unique opportunity to assist in shaping the editorial voice of a key new brand. They will support the team in establishing its style and values; drive traffic, audience growth and membership subscriptions; and establish the site as a global authority in pop culture and at ReedPop events.
For 15 years, ReedPop has been innovating in the B2C event space and this launch combines the reputation and built-in audience of our live events with the expertise of our Digital team, who have successfully built gaming websites like Eurogamer, Rock Paper Shotgun, Dicebreaker, and more. Our unique strengths in both areas means that this new initiative is a significant opportunity to pursue ambitious ideas with maximum reach, leveraging the extensive access to studios, publishers, developers, creators, and on-screen talent that ReedPop enjoys worldwide.
Our ideal candidate brings with them extensive journalism and published writing experience (substantial online component preferred), alongside the drive and ambition to produce content that covers comics, movies/tv, gaming, anime, and everything in between. A deep understanding of the pop culture space is essential: you will need to know the main industry trends and the current state of editorial and have a clear vision for how this new initiative can stand out in the current media landscape. Where you don’t know it yourself, you will work with our Editor-In-Chief to discover and commission the writers and creators who can deliver the expert insight for which ReedPop’s brands are known.
As Deputy Editor you will create, commission, and edit exciting and entertaining pieces on pop culture, constructed to reach the widest possible audience through SEO, social media, and direct traffic. You will work to build a fledging team while acting as a conduit between our editorial and event brands. You’ll work with the dedicated Marketing staff to create plans for content distribution, support newsletter initiatives, and work with internal event team to obtain maximum reach for content. You will create and implement new strategies to grow traffic and video views on the site and on YouTube, and conceive and deliver brand representation at events internationally, at both ReedPop events and beyond. You’ll balance audience growth alongside serving our small but growing band of paying Metaverse subscribers.
The successful applicant will be expected to appear on video and podcasts internally and externally, and will have the opportunity to appear on stage at ReedPop events worldwide.
Responsibilities Include:
Work with the Editor-in-Chief to deliver the editorial voice and brand values for this new ReedPop initiative
Shape the site into a significant and trusted voice in the pop culture space
Day-to-day engagement with event teams to ensure relevant content is syndicated across all relevant properties
Work in our CMS to make sure stories meet a high standard of presentation
Identify new growth opportunities for the site, both editorially and commercially
Deliver accurate, clear and concise copy to hourly, daily and weekly deadlines, following well-defined editorial standards
Engage with freelance pool of best-in-the-business writers, and conceive, commission and edit writing from those writers within budget
Identify the agenda-setting communities that can inform potential stories and content
Appear on stage and in video
Work closely with PRs and other contacts to go deeper on stories and articles
Work closely with sales team to ideate and execute sponsored content campaigns
Required Skills and Experience:
Previous experience editing or leading the direction of an entertainment website or magazine
Experience working collaboratively with peers across multiple departments
An understanding of how the business of pop culture and events operates – which products perform strongly, latest industry trends and the key players in the market
A keen sense for the next big thing in pop culture
Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
Strong work ethic with a high degree of determination and drive
Positive attitude and a team mentality
Passion and excitement about pop culture
Knowledge of how to construct pages and articles to attract an audience beyond the site, including search and social platforms
Knowledge of the conversion tactics that will drive readers to become paying subscribers
Openness and understanding of advanced analytics (including Google Analytics, Search Console, and Parse.ly)
Understanding of how to incorporate commerce (affiliate, merchandise sales) into editorial strategy
Travel as required
Desirable Skills and Experience:
Specific experience in covering live pop culture events
Prior experience in public speaking or live hosting
A journalism qualification or degree in a relevant subject (or applicable experience)
Video streaming experience and experience with sites such as Twitch, YouTube, TikTok etc.
