The Associated Press seeks a talented and aggressive visual journalist to work in its San Francisco bureau as a photographer and multi-format journalist.
Responsibilities:
Reporting to a deputy news director in AP’s U.S. West region, this photographer will cover spot news, enterprise and sporting events in Northern California and may travel on occasion to cover of news outside of the state. The successful candidate will be a self-starter who can create images and generate visually led story ideas that go beyond spot news and will resonate in San Francisco, in California and around the world. The successful candidate will be comfortable working in multiple media formats, from the field and from the desk, and with photographing breaking news, sports and enterprise.
The successful candidate will:
have a demonstrated history of success as a news photographer, with a record of creating compelling visual journalism on deadline and the production of visual enterprise that is illuminating and entertaining.
work among a team of journalists, reporters and editors to deliver spot, sports and enterprise imagery that breaks news, has impact and is exclusive to AP.
have strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with the diverse team of journalists at the AP who operate in all formats: text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics.
have a great news sense, with the ability to communicate stories that people will want to share, like and talk about on social media and other platforms.
routinely contribute to the video and text report as coverage needs require, pursue innovative coverage techniques while maintaining AP’s standards for integrity and objectivity, and must have the ability and willingness to work any shift, including at night and on weekends, or as coverage demands, as AP is a 24/7 operation.
Qualifications:
This photographer must have demonstrated excellence as a visual journalist, with a deep record of delivering exclusive and distinctive, spot news, sports and enterprise images. Applicants must be able to illustrate complex stories in clear and compelling ways with arresting visuals and do so swiftly and accurately on tight deadlines. A strong set of technical skills are required, including a sharp sense of photo composition, the ability to compose as events unfold, edit digital images, write accurate and informative captions and transmit images swiftly. This photographer should have experience planning for coverage of events and must be able to work effectively as a member of a team. Applicants should have at least three years of full-time experience as a photographer at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, online or digital news outlet, or an AP bureau or regional desk.
Other qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
All applicants must be able to work in the U.S. or be able to gain permission to do so.
Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English. Professional competency in a language besides English is a plus.
Advanced-level professional competency in photography and photo editing.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats and deliver success on a complex, challenging story lines.
