JOB DUTIES: This is an entry-level project manager position whose key role is management responsibility for 7 to 12 projects that are less complex and to assist senior project consultants in more complex projects.

Responsible for working closely with the project sponsor to do some or all of the following: plan, monitor and control the project budget, identify the site location and theme, conduct contract negotiations, maintain the web-based registration, logistical management and all indirect purchases followed by a return on investment analysis following the event. While working independently, the incumbent relies on their direct supervisor and more senior project consultants for advice and direction when necessary.

At times direct internal salaried support staff. Direct, manage and negotiate pricing with service providers, which may include, but is not limited to any of the following: hotel and conference center staff, destination management companies, transportation companies, audiovisual support, entertainment, speaker’s bureau, convention and visitor bureaus, production companies, restaurants, etc.

Typical internal customers include various contacts throughout Caterpillar worldwide and its subsidiaries. External contacts include various customers, dealers and vendors throughout worldwide markets.

The position is challenged to quickly and correctly identify problems that may not be obvious. Solves problems by determining the best course of action, within departmental guidelines, from many existing solutions. The incumbent is free to determine the best way to complete job assignments in order to achieve desired results. The team or supervisor gives general instructions on what needs to be done, when it needs to be done and how it is typically done. The jobholder knows in advance the details of what needs to be done to serve customers and the standard procedures in place to accomplish it. Impacts key quality goals including Customer Satisfaction, Continuous Improvement, Timeliness, Accuracy, Efficiency, Cost Savings, etc.

The position could travel extensively; up to three full weeks per month; services may be required on site four to five weeks at a time.

Basic Qualifications:
The position typically requires a college or university degree or 5 plus years of project management skills.
Must have prior experience with project management.
Personal computer skills and familiarity with various software packages is required.

It also requires knowledge of various Caterpillar products, product applications or merchandising programs.
Good human relations skills are required to develop a cooperative work relationship with others inside and outside the department.
