Job Description : Position Title: Organist/PianistOverall Responsibility: Worship plays a central role in the life and ministry of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. The worship experience is essential component of faith formation and preparation for service in the community. The main function of this position is to equip the congregation to fully participate in worship so that the singing of hymns and liturgy is truly the “work of the people”.Accompany (or provide for accompaniment) all worship services, using organ, as well as piano and other instruments, as appropriate.Provide accompaniment for the Choir, attending weekly rehearsals (generally September – May).Specific Duties & Responsibilities: Select music appropriate to the Lutheran liturgical year for the prelude, postlude and (when required) offertory for weekly worship servicesWork collaboratively with staff and Worship and Music committee members in planning worship and coordinating the music ministry at St. Paul’s, including serving as a member of the Worship and Music CommitteeIn conjunction with staff and Worship and Music committee members develop short and long-term planning for the music ministry at St. Paul’sBe primary resource to play at weddings and funerals (the Music Director is granted right of first refusal for these special services and is compensated with an added stipend)Coordinate volunteers for special music (Christmas Eve, Holy Week, Easter, summer worship, other Sundays, as requested)Secure and prepare capable musician(s) to accompany worship for absencesSchedule substitute musicians in consultation with Pastor and Choir DirectorResponsible for determining access to the organ to ensure guests have appropriate qualifications and know expectations around its usage and careDirects need for and resources for maintenance of organ and pianosAssist the Worship and Music Committee and Pastor to plan for services and make annual budget recommendationsProvide timely input of worship music selections for Sunday and special services to the Church Office for inclusion in printed materialsOther tasks as required to support the music ministry of the church, including staff meetings and planning activities and coordinating spending with a team of musicians in coordination with the PastorQualifications: Minimum 3 years’ experience as a church organist and proficiency on a pipe organSkills at a level sufficient to perform works in a variety of musical genres and stylesAbility to sight read music at a high level of skillPosition requires an understanding of the liturgical year, Christian musical and liturgical traditions, and ability to select appropriate music to coincide with scripture and worship themesFamiliarity with Lutheran liturgical resources preferredStrong organization and communication skillsAbility to work on a team, including with volunteers, to carry out the ministry of music and initiate new opportunitiesAppreciate and encourage the contributions of amateur musiciansWork RelationshipsThe Organist:The Organist/Pianist will be supervised by the Church Council Vice-President and be accountable to the Church Council. Any questions about church polices and established work practice should be direct to the Church Council Vice-President.Work closely with other staff members and ministry areasAttends staff meetings, Worship and Music committee meetings and gatheringsJob performance and salary conditions are subject to yearly review.Work Agreements: Pay Shall be set by the Church Council as approved by the Congregation during the annual budgeting process.Paychecks are issued bi-weekly upon submission of a signed time sheet to the Business Manager.Position is classified as Hourly, Non-Exempt.Benefits One week paid vacation. Any other time off, outside of bereavement, will be without pay. * Personal days must be arranged with the Vice President and the Pastor at least one working week in advance. Sick time granted as necessary.
