Job Description : Position Title: Organist (P/T)Reports To: Director of Music and Arts and PastorWork Hours: Sunday morning, Wednesday PM rehearsal (negotiable, contingent upon candidate availability), special services when requiredSalary: Negotiable, depending on education and experienceThe First United Methodist Church of Jasper, Texas seeks an organist for traditional Sunday morning services, other special services throughout the year, and weddings and funerals as needed. The Music Ministry is staffed by the Director of Music and Arts, organist, and pianist. (All positions are part-time.) The organist is the lead instrument for Sunday morning worship, accompanying congregational singing and providing other special music as needed (prelude, postlude, etc.). Additionally, the organ is the sole instrument for Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, and Good Friday services.This is a salaried, part-time, non-exempt position. The organist (and Chancel Choir) will have the month of August off. Additionally, the organist will have four (4) days to be used at his/her discretion.Key Responsibilities· Plan, rehearse, and produce music for worship services. (Music for congregational singing is chosen by the Director of Music and Arts.)· Provide the office staff with the organist’s service music for the weekly Order of Worship not later than the Thursday before the Sunday it is to be played. Music selections are the prerogative of the organist but should, when possible, be selected to reflect the theme of the service and/or the season of the church year.· Accompany Chancel Choir as needed.· Accompany soloists as needed.· Play for weddings and funerals held in church.· Attend yearly August choir retreat.· Keep a record of the instrument’s maintenance concerns/needs and coordinate maintenance or repairs with the DoMA.Qualifications and Professional ProficiencyThe organist must be capable of selecting and providing a wide variety of appropriately-themed preludes, offertories, and postludes, and should be familiar with The United Methodist Hymnal, The Faith We Sing, and the Cokesbury hymnal. The sanctuary instruments are a Rogers 955 3-manual organ and a Kawai baby grand piano. The organist should be capable of taking full advantage of the features of the organ and its MIDI capabilities.The organist should possess:· the ability to navigate skillfully a variety of musical styles,· an ability to creatively enhance congregational singing,· a desire to maintain and improve keyboard skills through regular practice in order to perform to a high standard,· a commitment to Jesus Christ and His church,· a degree in music, preferably with an emphasis in organ and piano, or adequate experience in church music, and· an ability to work with persons in a professional manner to affirm and develop their abilities, gifts and graces.Application ProcessTo initiate the application process, email videos of two contrasting organ performances and one worship hymn, as well as a letter of interest and resume to Tod A.
