Position Summary:

The School of Music at Washington State University (WSU) invites applications for a permanent full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Music Business, Jazz Studies, and Commercial Composition at the Pullman, WA campus (nine-month appointment). Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience, and benefits are competitive. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will begin the appointment on August 16, 2022.

Summary of Duties:

Serve as the coordinator of the music business degree. Teach and develop courses in the undergraduate music business curriculum. Teach jazz and commercial composition lessons at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Other possible teaching assignments could include directing a jazz ensemble, coaching jazz combos, or classroom instruction, dependent upon the strengths of the successful candidate and program needs. Develop and maintain a high level of scholarship, research, and/or creative activity. Provide service to the unit, college, university, and profession.

Required Qualifications:

Master’s degree in music or related field (e.g., Master of Business Administration) by the time of hire

Proven or demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching music business courses

Proven or demonstrated potential for excellence in jazz and commercial composition

Potential to produce significant scholarly achievements, creative activities, and/or research related to the position

Demonstrated high level of organizational skills and interpersonal communication

Willingness to work collaboratively with faculty to mentor students from a wide range of academic disciplines, cultures, and academic backgrounds

Preferred Qualifications:

Earned doctorate in music or a terminal degree in a related field such as, but not limited to, Juris Doctor or Doctor of Business Administration

Previous university/college teaching experience in music business and jazz/commercial composition

Demonstrated skills in music technology

Previous experience with curriculum and program development

Demonstrated ability to contribute to a comprehensive university music program through ensemble direction, jazz combo coaching, and/or classroom instruction

The School of Music, based on the WSU Pullman campus, has 28 full-time music faculty and 8 staff members. The School is housed in the Kimbrough Music Building, which includes a professional quality, digital recording studio with a full-time audio engineer.
